PDF/A is a format standardised by ISO (the ISO 19005 standard) and built for one job: long-term PDF archiving. An ordinary PDF may depend on fonts installed on your machine, on colours rendered differently from one screen to another, or on external resources that will eventually vanish. Ten or twenty years later, nothing guarantees it will look the way it does today.
PDF/A removes that uncertainty. It embeds every font inside the file, pins device-independent colours and forbids any external dependency, so the document is self-contained and stays readable exactly as it was. That is why administrations, legal archives and compliance teams so often require this format. To convert a PDF to PDF/A is to guarantee that a contract, a deed or a report can be reopened intact long after it was created.
