To flatten a PDF is to merge its interactive fields — text boxes, checkboxes, buttons — directly into the page content. Their appearance is preserved exactly, but they stop existing as editable elements: what was a ticked checkbox becomes a plain drawing on the page rather than an object that can be unticked.
Why flatten a PDF form? Because a completed form remains, by default, editable by whoever receives it.
