What is OCR PDF and why do you need it?

A scanned page is really just a photograph: your PDF reader sees an image, not words. OCR PDF (optical character recognition) reads that image, identifies each letter and turns it into real, selectable and searchable text. It is what brings a frozen document back to life.

This step changes everyday work. Once the text is recognised, you can copy a passage, search for a word across the whole file and reuse a paper document without retyping it. That is exactly why you extract text from a scanned PDF: old contracts, invoices received by post, filled-in forms and digitised archives finally become usable.

What affects accuracy, and what comes next

The result depends above all on the quality of the scan. A sharp, straight, high-contrast document scanned at 300 dpi or more gives reliable recognition. Be sure to select the correct language too, as it guides how characters and accents are interpreted. Handwriting, however, stays unreliable: OCR is built for printed text.

Once the text is extracted, you pick the next tool for your goal. For a fully editable document, use pdf-to-word; to adjust the file directly, use edit; and to change formats, let convert take over.

On privacy, there is nothing complicated: no sign-up is required and your files are deleted automatically after processing. Your documents are used only to produce your text, nothing more.
