This tool keeps a single family of sheets at a time: either the even PDF pages (2, 4, 6…) or the odd ones (1, 3, 5…). You get back a new, trimmed document in which every page of the other parity is gone, while your source file stays untouched.
The main use case is recovering a double-sided document after an awkward scan. When you scan paper printed on both sides using a scanner that only reads one face, you often end up with two interleaved runs: the fronts on one side, the backs on the other. By extracting the odd pages and then the even pages, you cleanly separate the front and back faces, ready to be put back together in the right order.
Picture a stack of ten sheets printed on both sides. First feed every front through the scanner: those become your odd pages. Then flip the stack and scan the backs: those become your even pages. Extract each parity from its own file, then rebuild the final document by alternating front, back, front, back.
For that reassembly step, lean on merge to fuse the two sets into a single PDF, then on reorder to fine-tune the exact sequence if the alternation is not perfect. If instead you want to cut the document into several separate files, split is the right tool. This even odd PDF pages routine — extract even pages PDF, extract the odd ones, recombine — turns a broken scan into a usable file.

It is handy after a double-sided scan on a single-side scanner: you can isolate the front faces (odd) and back faces (even) to reassemble them afterwards.
Scan the fronts first, then the backs, and use this tool to isolate the odd and even pages. You can then interleave them to restore the original double-sided order.
It is based on the physical position of pages in the file: the 1st page is odd, the 2nd even, and so on. A different printed numbering does not affect this split.
